Neapolitans - Breeders - History

Neapolitan Mastiffs are definitely a very old breed of dog. Ancient drawings depict the ancestors of the Neapolitan Mastiff creating evidence of its venerable age. The breed originated in Italy as a guard dog, and a fighter. The Romans used it both in war and entertainment.

Those giant, courageous dogs with a vicious appearance and a firm grasp, could do a fitting rebuff to lions, tigers, and human gladiators. Strong and devoted to their masters, Neapolitan Mastiffs fought to the last breathe. They could lose life, but never dignity.

Even today the Neapolitan Mastiff preserves physical qualities necessary for such cruel battles. Lose skin that forms numerous wrinkles on the head and elsewhere, was sure to save a dog's life more than once. Ears and tail, the parts of the body most susceptible to injury, were docked to prevent wounds.

Roman invasions, during which Neapolitan Mastiff's ancestors were brought to various countries and bred with native breeds, were supplementary in producing an even stronger dog. It was used to guard property and its owner. As a matter of fact, the Neapolitan Mastiff managed the job with ease. Dark coat color and smooth, cat-like gait did him a great favor. The dog could come up to strangers unnoticed and keep hold of them till guardians appeared. It is still believed in southern areas of Italy that there is no better guard dog than the Neapolitan Mastiff.

It was in Southern Italy where the population of the breed did not decrease over time. In the 19th century, the economy of the country was in a recession making the Neapolitan Mastiff the breed for the elite. Neapolitan Mastiffs owned by the rich were used to guard their estates.

The second half of the 20th century was particularly hard for the dog. The situation improved thanks to the efforts of Piero Scanziani, an owner of "Di Villanova" kennel. It was he who promoted the breed and organized the SAMN in Italy (Societa' Amatori Mastino Napoletano). Neapolitan Mastiffs were registered as a separate breed in 1949.
